Being safe on the internet

July 9th, 2012 · No Comments

I have been surfing the internet for about 15 years now (oh gosh, has it been so long?) and on my journeys through the deep currents of the internet I have come across some parts that can be pretty harmful to your computer. During my first years I used to hang out on IRC (internet relay chat) where you could people who tried to hack you. They were never able to hack me because I am always careful and pride myself on having knowledge about computer security. There are of course security software that can be used to keep you safe online. One important aspect with such software is that it is updated regularly, like virus databases for Norton Antivirus or other security programs. I do not frequent IRC anymore, but sometimes online surfing can bring me to places that can be a bit sketchy.

My best tip for being safe on the internet is staying away from shady websites that provides illegal downloads and naughty videos. They are often filled with malicious scripts and downloads that could infest your computer with viruses within minutes. While most regular photo blogs would be considered safe I would stay away from downloading photo editing software from untrusted sources, if you are not 100% sure what you are doing. It might be tempting to download illegal copies of the software, but a few dollars saved here and there might not be the best idea. It also nice to know that you have contributed financially to the makers behind the software especially if you it as much as me.
