On my trip to Northern Norway this summer I went on many fishing trips. One day when I was exiting the harbor there was a Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) sitting on lamp post. It didn’t seem to mind me so I grabbed my camera to get a picture of this beautiful bird. It was not very easy to capture the picture as I was sitting in a boat that was moving both sideways and up and down in the waves, and I wished that I had brought a lens with longer focal length.

The Great Cormorant is pretty common in Norway and I often see it when there is herring in the fjord. In other parts of the world they actually train this bird to fish for them as they are great fishers. I have never heard that this has been done in Norway, though.

Please see my other bird pictures here.

I posted a picture on the popular website reddit.com, some weeks ago, that showed the small village where I grew up. As you can see in the picture I have photographed the village up from the mountains called Kråketindene. The house that I grew up in is the white one in the upper right corner.

As a result of posting the picture on reddit it got over 462 000 views (462 thousand views!) and 805 comments. Many wondered about the circles that you can see in the harbour (they are used for farming salmon). Other frequent questions were about how it is to live in Norway during the winter and if there are available jobs here (it seems like quite a few Americans want to try how it is to live abroad). After reading all the comments I feel really lucky to have such a beautiful place in the north.
You can read all the comments over at the thread on reddit.

You can see the mountain range where I was photographing from in this picture.
