A couple of weeks ago I caught a 24 kg (53 lb) heavy cod on a bottom-longline. This is the biggest fish I have caught in years so I was very excited when I dragged the huge fish up from the depth of the ocean.
The head was so big that it alone completely filled a 10 liter (2.5 gallon) bucket.
Here is a close up picture of the cod. If you click the image you can look at the picture in a bigger size.

As I mentioned I used a bottom-longline to catch the cod. A bottom-longline is a long line filled with many hooks that are baited. I used some herring that I caught last year as bait since herring seems to be loved by larger fish. The longline is placed on the bottom of the ocean over night and is dragged with a lot of excitement as you never know what you might catch. I also caught a nice Atlantic halibut and some smaller cods along with the 24 kg cod.
Here is a picture of me, the proud fisherman with orange fishing-trousers, holding the big cod:
In this picture you can see a small fishing boat that is called “sjark” in Norwegian, sailing on the fjord. These small fishing boats are very typical for the fisheries on the coast in Northern Norway and I’m hoping that some day I will be doing fishing from a sjark too. They can be quite expensive to buy especially if you want to buy the boat with a quota for commercial fishing.
The spots over the boat and in the sky are seagulls and not dust spots on the camera sensor/lens

Here are a couple of other pictures of fishing boats on the sea in Northern Norway:

In this picture you can see a close up shot of an Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) that I fished earlier this year. This fish is so tasteful that my mouth waters just by writing this and despite it looks, its my favorite fish to eat
The Atlantic halibut is one of the biggest flastfishes on our planet. It can become over 3 meters long and weigh well over 300 kg. The one I caught wasn’t not even close to those sizes and weighed about 4-5 kg. It still gave me quite a fight when I tried to reel it in with my fishing rod.
If you should ever have to luck of getting a big Atlantic halibut you have to be careful when you get it into your boat. I have heard a story about a man that was found dead with the halibuts tail deep inside his breast. They are very powerful!

Check this picture for a view from my fishing boat and this one of my uncle steering the boat to rich fishing grounds.

What a wonderful day it was to be out on the sea here in northern Norway. The sea was completely calm and the clouds was amazing so a perfect day for a fishing trip. In this photo you can see my uncle steering my boat to the fishing grounds. Did not catch much fish, but it was a very nice trip on the fjord.

I find these old fishing boats made of tree very beautiful. Hope to own one myself some day..

Maybe you wont believe me, but I’m standing on a pier with the pretty large town Harstad right behind me. This scenery doesn’t look very urban, does it?
I was staying in Harstad for 3 weeks attending a course and had a real hard time finding things to take photos of. I’m glad to be back home where there are more nature to walk around in

The mountains in the back are from the islands Rolløya and Andørja (where I live).

This photo was shot on back in the beginning of March this year and I actually miss the winter a little bit.
I don’t miss the cold, but miss the light that is very special in winter. Now it’s daylight 24 hours a day and that is not so exciting photography wise.
Each season has good sides

You can see Venus shining over the boatshed and fjord making the scenery even nicer.

Fishing on the ocean in March is very early for me, but I could not resist with the wonderful weather.
The “wheel” you see in the boat is a fishing device used for deep water. It’s called “juksa” in Norwegian.
My grand father made it over 50 years ago and it still works like a charm.

In the horizon you can see the island Senja, the second largest island in Norway.
