I was out rowing, for the first time this year, when I saw this herring gull (Larus argentatus) standing on a seawall. Had to take a picture of the seagull with the snow covered forest as background.
Let me tell you that it is not particularly easy to take photos from a small and rocky rowboat. Especially when you are trying to zoom in on a bird.

Here is another picture of the seawall.
If you have been following this blog you probably know that I enjoy taking photographs of the simple beauties in nature. I was walking the beach and liked the colors on the stones, seaweed and ocean so I photographed the scene when a small wave came in.
The light this time of the year can be marvelous

Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera February 14th 2008. Click image for larger view.
It’s time for a simple photo from the rocky coast here in Northern Norway. I love to observe and listen to the massive waves that come crashing in when we have stormy weather. If you look at the picture large you can see some seaweed inside of the waves. The seaweed must have some incredible strength to be able to cling fast during such extreme conditions.
When the weather is like this you can taste the saltwater in your throat for a long time afterwards and it is supposed to be very good for sinus problems. I hope my camera and lenses wont take any damage from the salt

Check out this blog post with pictures and recorded sound of waves from last winter.

I photographed these lichen covered rocks when the tide was very high. Usually the sea doesn’t reach this high, but the lichen must be somewhat resistant to the saltwater to survive the waves.
I really love the texture and formations the lichen create on rocks.
For new readers: The foggy effect was created by using a 20 seconds long exposure of the moving water.

I used a 20 second long shutter speed to create the dreamy and foggy effect. It almost looks like a mountaintop peaking through some mist.

As you can see in this photo, summer has not completely left northern Norway.

These rocks are part of an old seawall that protects our boats against the wild storms that can hit northern Norway in the autumn and winter.
You can see the seawall with waves beating against (and over) it in this photo and in this photo with more calm weather.

I got a comment on Flickr, by BobG, that this picture would be great as a wallpaper on a computer screen. Steve, author of the great blog cyrum66, recently wanted another picture as desktop background (thanks for the donation Steve!).
So I got the idea to make this pebble picture available as a free download.

Download the 1024×768 version of the picture here. Drop me a line if you should need an even larger version. I got it up to 3264×2448.
The picture is only available for personal use and should not be used commercially.

I would like to hear what my readers think of this idea. Think it can make my blog more popular?

What you see on the picture is me experimenting with a long shutter time. I placed the camera on a tripod and made the camera take the photo for 10 seconds so small waves would roll over some of the pebbles. This make the foggy effect you can see on the right side of the picture.
