I find snail shells to have a fascinating coiled structure that makes a good picture. Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera April 2nd 2008. Click image for larger view.
In this picture you can see four yellow snail shells from some kind of land snail species. During the winter the markings on the shells has almost vanished so it is hard to say what species they are, but I’m guessing these are shells of white-lipped snails (Cepaea hortensis) as they are native pretty far north.
You may notice that a couple of the shells are broken. The broken shells combined with a lot of mice droppings around them make me suspect that mice have had a gastronomical meal.
Feel free to leave comment if you know what kind of snail species this is.

Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera February 28th 2008. Click image for larger view.
In this macro picture you can see a common limpet (Patella vulgata) covered with barnacles (Semibalanus balanoides) at low tide. The limpets are snails that feed on algae living on hard rock and stones. They are able adhere themselves strongly to hard surfaces and can be very hard to peel off if they sense danger.
I have been watching some TV-shows by the survivalist Ray Mears where he use a stick to whack them off using the surprise factor. I will have to try to cook some limpets later this year and I will report back here on how they taste
If you look in the background you can see another limpet waiting for the tide to come back in.
The barnacles (Semibalanus balanoides) seem to get a free ride with the limpet, but I’m guessing the limpet is glad for having some extra camouflage.

Check out this photo of the shell of a limpet filled with small pieces of sand. The inside have some beautiful structures and colors.

When I was a kid I used to play at the coast all the time. One of my favorite activities was to look under rocks and seaweed when the tide was out. There was always something interesting to find, like a butterfish, a crab or some funky colored periwinkles. I still enjoy walking the coastline and I always bring the camera

These shells are called Ocean Quahog (Arctica islandica) and I had to take a photo of them because I liked the way the pair was placed on the sandy beach.
In Norwegian we call them Cow-Shells, probably because of their beautiful red/brown color.
According to the Norwegian Wikipedia (the English version doesn’t have an article about ocean quahog shells) there have been found individuals of these shells that are as old as 220 years!
