We have been having some crazy snowfalls lately here in Southern Norway (I moved to the south from Northern Norway half a year ago for those who don’t know). Some people might think all the snow means a lot of trouble, but I like it. It is fun to play in the snow with the kids and it creates many good photo opportunities.

In this photo you can see a pine tree totally covered in snow. All the snow on the branches show how much snow that really came in a matter of a few hours.
I found the pine tree when I was walking in the forest with snow up to my hip. It was hard walking, but it was wonderful to watch all the untouched snow.

Check out my other photo of a pine tree in winter landscape and other snow pictures here.
We have had a lot of gray weather lately so there hasn’t been many photo opportunities, but the other day there was some colored clouds in the sky in the evening. I had to take out the camera and photograph these birch trees with the clouds as background. Also notice the cold mist behind the winter trees.
I recommend that you click on the picture to view it large to get a better perspective of the wide angle (11mm).

Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera January 1st 2009. Click image for larger view.
When I was walking in the forest I came across a Norwegian Spruce (Picea abies) tree that was broken and I liked the view with the trunk looking at the fallen tree. It seems like a strong wind had passed through the forest and snapped the tree in two. There was several trees in that area that had been toppled over some years ago (the vegetation had started to grow back) so it was a cool area to explore.
I had to climb up some trees to get this picture and I almost fell down several times . I think the broken tree picture got somewhat of a dark, eerie feeling to it. What do you think?

I was out walking in the forest early today and I came across this field that was frozen. I really enjoyed all the grass that had frozen in the water and the trees standing around the field covered with rime.
We are having a cold period with -12C so everything outside is covered with frozen water and gives me a lot of photo opportunities.

Happy new year everyone! My resolution for 2009 is to take way more pictures and post them on this blog as I have lately been a bit lazy when it comes to photography. In this picture you can see some Norway maple (Acer platanoides) leaves that I photographed this autumn. I really like the shape of maple leaves and with autumn colors they can be a stunning sight. The sun were shining through the tree tops unto the leaves so I just had to take a picture of them.
The autumn colors are almost gone now so it is nice to able to look some pictures and remember how nice it was.
The Norway maple is the only type of maple tree that is native to Norway. The maple trees grow in the southern part of Norway where the climate is a bit warmer.

Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera October 19th 2008. Click image for larger view.
Here I have photographed a beautiful Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) bird. This is the first time I have ever photographed a woodpecker as they are pretty rare and often fly off before you are able to take a good photo. The Great Spotted Woodpecker is one of our biggest woodpeckers and it is the most common woodpecker bird in Europe. The Great Spotted Woodpecker is about 25 cm long and weighs 70–90 g.
In the winter the bird eats seeds from spruce and pine trees, and some bark beetles. During the summer it mainly eats insects, but the Great Spotted Woodpecker is also known for breaking into nests and eating the young birds.

Autumn brings us some fantastic colors to photograph. Here is a picture from a walk I had in the forest yesterday. Some places the forest the ground was completely covered with yellow leaves. It was so beautiful and of course I had to take some pictures.
I like how the sun shines through the treetops and the wooden stairs to the left, add more interestingness to the picture. The wooden stairs have been built on this wood track to help people at the steepest parts in the forest.
Feel free to click on the picture to view it in large size to see more details.

The last few nights has seen more or less clear skies and since the moon was just full I had to step outside to take this picture of the moon rising above some treetops. I like the mystic feeling in this picture with the shining clouds around the moon and the treetops that makes a kind of frame in the picture. If you click on the picture and view it in large size you can get a better view of treetops.

Check out my other moon photos here. I especially like this one of the moon over a winter mountain and this picture of a “red” moon over the island Senja.
After a period of not taking any pictures I got some inspiration today and went out on a photo trip.
I found an area where some Scots pine trees (Pinus sylvestris) were growing wild. I really liked the form on this little tree and the snowy scenery made a good background for a picture. The mountain peak is many kilometers away, but I used a zoom lens to make it look closer.
Scots pine is the only pine tree species growing wild here in Norway. It can reach 40 meters and there has been found trees that are over 800 years old.

Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera March 14th 2008. Click image for larger view.
I was walking in the forest the other day when the reflection of the sunset started to glow on the snow around me. I had to take a picture of the beautiful scene with the trees covering the sun making a natural filter for my camera.
If you look at the photo in large size you can see some spots where the snow has melted and some old grass is peaking through. Spring is right around the corner here in Northern Norway

Check out this picture of snow covered trees in a scene looking a bit like The Chronicles of Narnia.
