Video of Killer Whales (Orca) hunting herring close to shore at Hamn in Senja, Northern Norway

Here is a video of a pack (or packs) of Killer whales (Orcinus orca) hunting fish extremely close to the shore at Senja in Northern Norway. We saw 25 whales or more in this small cove, and they were all hunting herring. The next day we even saw a few Killer whales that almost stranded on a sandy beach, but they rolled back out into the sea.

We even saw some other larger species of whales further out at the sea, but due to low light it was not possible to make out the species of whale. There has been lots of observations of whales hunting herring in Northern Norway at places such as Senja, Andenes and islands by Tromsø. If you get the chance you would definitely go on a whale safari to watch these magnificent creatures.

For the first time I have gone out fishing on the sea during the polar night period in Northern Norway. And what an experience that is. Even though we got no sunlight the light can be absolutely beautiful with different colors everywhere as you can see in these photos.

Above you can see how the sky looks in the middle of the day, and below you can see when the sky starts to get darker.
The mountain in the picture is called Drangen and is located on the island Rolla. It is a very picturesque mountain.

But the main reason I went out on the sea was to fish. I was able to catch some nice Christmas cod and even had an Atlantic halibut circling a small cod on my hook. The halibut circled for about 10 rounds before snatching the cod off my hook and then it went back into the cold, dark deep. It was a pity I was not able to catch it, but what an amazing experience!

Picture from the darkest day in Northern Norway 21st of December 2012

Picture from the darkest day in Northern Norway 21st of December 2012
Taken with Olympus EPL-1 digital camera September 21st December 2012. Click image for larger view.

I had the pleasure of visiting my home place during the darkest days of this winter. Since we had clear weather it was not really dark at all in the middle of the day. Quite the opposite as the sky was filled with wonderful colors from a sun in the distant horizon.
I photographed the picture above a bit later than noon and the day was actually even lighter earlier in the day. The colors of the sky varied throughout the day and it was amazing to see, especially since I now live in the middle of Oslo where there is not so much landscapes to be seen.

The mountain you can see in this photo is called Drangen and I have photographed this magnificent piece of rock several times like here and here.

Picture of winter landscape in Oslo – Skiing in Nordmarka

Picture of winter landscape in Oslo - Skiing in Nordmarka
Taken with Olympus EPL-1 digital camera February 11nd 2012. Click image for larger view.

Living in the largest city in Norway does not mean that there are no possibilities to get out into the nature. There is actually tons of opportunities to get into the wild like hiking in the woods, fishing in the fjords, and like in this picture going skiing in Nordmarka. Nordmarka is a forested area north of Oslo where you can skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer. It is so close to the city that you can even go there by the Oslo Metro.
In the summer you can also go fishing in this area, in addition to off-road cycling, and picking wild berries and mushrooms.

In this picture we went skiing from a metro station called Frognersæteren, through some areas where it had snowed heavy and ended up at Sognsvann where we got on the Metro to get back home. It was a great day with plenty of beautiful scenery and a good six hour workout.

Black and white picture from winter road trip in Northern Sweden

Black and white picture from winter road trip in Northern Sweden
Taken with Olympus EPL-1 digital camera December 28th 2011. Click image for larger view.

This Christmas I visited Northern Norway for the Holiday. I usually go by plane to the north, but this time we drove from Trondheim, in the middle of Norway, to my home island of Andørja. This kind of trip can be quite challenging during the winter.

On the way south we went through Northern Sweden and there was some nice winter scenery when we passed the mountain ranges. In the picture above I have photographed a winter road in black and white. The landscape up there is very desolate and far away from everything so a black and white conversion suited the scenery.
I also like the effect that you can see in the foreground on the road that happens because I took the picture while sitting in a moving car.
