I went for a spring trip to Northern Norway this year, and oh my did it pay off. The weather has been fantastic with temperatures well above 20 degree Celsius, something that is unusual this early in the year.
In the picture above I have photographed the view from my bedroom at midnight on the 19th of May. It is about this time we get midnight sun, but the sun went behind the mountains. Nevertheless, the view was spectacular and making it hard to go to sleep.
The mountains that you see far in the horizon is the second largest island in Norway, Senja. Please click on the photo to view it in larger size.

Spring is such a wonderful time in the north with all the birds coming back, flowers are popping up everywhere and the boat is finally back on the water. I think I need to take a week off every year to visit the old house on Andørja.

I posted a picture on the popular website reddit.com, some weeks ago, that showed the small village where I grew up. As you can see in the picture I have photographed the village up from the mountains called Kråketindene. The house that I grew up in is the white one in the upper right corner.

As a result of posting the picture on reddit it got over 462 000 views (462 thousand views!) and 805 comments. Many wondered about the circles that you can see in the harbour (they are used for farming salmon). Other frequent questions were about how it is to live in Norway during the winter and if there are available jobs here (it seems like quite a few Americans want to try how it is to live abroad). After reading all the comments I feel really lucky to have such a beautiful place in the north.
You can read all the comments over at the thread on reddit.

You can see the mountain range where I was photographing from in this picture.

Pictures of eating-frenzy seagulls on the sea in Northern Norway

Pictures of eating frenzy seagulls on the sea in Northern Norway
Taken with Apple iPhone 3GS phone camera August 25th 2012.

Here I have photographed some seagulls when I was out fishing last month in Northern Norway. There is always some seagulls around your boat when you are out on the sea, just waiting for you to throw them some goodies. On this trip we caught a lot of fish so we had to do some gutting and these seagulls love fish guts. After a while more and more seagulls arrive at the scene and it becomes quite crowded around the boat as you can see in the pictures.
There were mostly European Herring Gulls (Larus argentatus) around the boat, but also some larger Great Black-backed gulls (Larus marinus).
The seagulls come really close to the boat and some even took guts from my hand.

Here is another picture from the feeding frenzy.

Photo of old wooden fishing boat on the sea by Harstad in Northern Norway

Photo of old wooden fishing boat on the sea by Harstad in Northern Norway
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera July 31st 2010. Click image for larger view.
I was just on a short visit in Northern Norway this summer. I did not have much time for photography, but found some minutes while waiting on a ferry to get home to the place where I grew up. While waiting this old wooden fishing boat passed out on the fjord so I had to take a picture of the boat with a lovely mountain in the background.

I love these old fishing boats as they tell a story how the fisheries used to be in Norway. Due to modern fishery politics many of these wooden boats have been demolished because the government wanted a more effective fishing fleet with fewer and bigger boats, but there are a few left and even some that still are partaking in the coastal fisheries. Even the boats that were owned by my family were sunken in the 50ies, which I find really sad. Hopefully we will have more sensible fisheries in the future so we will not destroy the fish stocks and the rest of the environment in our oceans.

Please take a look at my other pictures of boats here.

Picture from the Oslofjord, Norway covered with broken ice

The Oslofjord in Norway was covered with ice this winter due to some very cold periods, and since I travel by ferry over the fjord almost every day I was able to get some pictures of the broken ice.
The ice wasn’t that thick so the ferries were able to travel, but smaller boats had to stay in the harbors.

And here is a picture where you can get a closer view of the ice covering the Oslofjord. Ice and snow can be beautiful!
