Picture of cottongrass (Eriophorum) growing on a marsh in northern Norway

Picture from a cottongrass (Eriophorum) marsh in northern Norway

I liked the light on this marsh so had to photograph the cottongrass (Eriophorum). The sunlight came seeping trough a small forest that was growing at the outskirts of the marsh. I think cottongrass is a beautiful plant with its fluffy appearance.

This photo was taken at 9PM in the evening so the sun was pretty low. 2 hours later the sun had gone behind the mountains and mist started to appear on the marshes. Check out this photo of the mist. One of my personal favorites 🙂

Macro picture of a blue eyed sawfly (Rhogogaster viridis)

Macro picture of a sawfly with blue eyes
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on June 24th, 2007. Click picture for larger view.

Time for another macro photo of an insect. This time I have captured a sawfly (Rhogogaster viridis) clinging to a straw.
I really like the blue eyes on this sawfly. If you look at my other sawfly photo you can see that sawfly having a different eye color. I believe they are different species.
Need to get myself an insect book to educate myself on the nature around me.

Check out my other insect photos if you digg insects!

Close up photo of water drop against yellow lichen with reflection of me, the sun and a mountain

Close up photo of a water drop against yellow lichen with reflection of me, the sun and a mountain
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on March 11th, 2007. Click picture for larger view.

I photographed this water drop back in March when there was still winter and not much living things around me. In the winter it can be hard to find colors up here in northern Norway, but you can find wonders in nature if you look hard enough.
Really liked the way the yellow lichen created a nice background against the falling water drops.

Try to click the image to look at it large. Can you see me in the reflection?
You should also be able to see the sun and a big mountain. It is the same mountain as you can see in this photo and this photo.

Macro photo of potato flower – soon time for harvest

Macro photo of potato flower
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on August 8th, 2007. Click picture for larger view.

In this photo you can see that my potato plants (Solanum tuberosum) have started to flower. These flowers are of a Norwegian potato species called Troll. When the potato plants start flowering you know that they are soon ready for harvest. I can’t wait to start digging up the potatoes and serve them with fresh fish that I have caught in the sea! Nothing taste better than food you have produced or caught yourself.

When I was studying the potato flower I noticed that they look very similar to tomato flowers. It’s not so weird since they are both in the Solanaceae family, but I have never noticed the similarity before.

Anyone else growing their own vegetables?

Photos of cloudberry plants – different stages of flowering and berries

Photo of cloudberry
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on July 27th, 2007. Click picture for larger view.

I have taken some pictures of the cloudberry plant in different stages of flowering and the final product as a tasteful berry (as you can see in the photo above).

The cloudberry plant (Rubus chamaemorus), or bakeapple as it is called some places, is slow growing sub-arctic specie that is a very important berry here in northern Norway. Cloudberries are mainly used as jam, with whipped cream, in cakes and some even make alcoholic drinks out of the berries.
When the berries are ripe there is a lot of competition among people to get a good harvest. There have even been reports of fighting 😉 Thus the price on cloudberries can be as high as 18-20$/kg.

The following pictures are of the cloudberry plant in different stages of flowering.

Notice the moth sitting on a leaf in this last picture.

Have anyone tasted cloudberries? It is not my favorite berry, but it is very nice with whipped cream and tons of sugar.
