For the first time I have gone out fishing on the sea during the polar night period in Northern Norway. And what an experience that is. Even though we got no sunlight the light can be absolutely beautiful with different colors everywhere as you can see in these photos.

Above you can see how the sky looks in the middle of the day, and below you can see when the sky starts to get darker.
The mountain in the picture is called Drangen and is located on the island Rolla. It is a very picturesque mountain.

But the main reason I went out on the sea was to fish. I was able to catch some nice Christmas cod and even had an Atlantic halibut circling a small cod on my hook. The halibut circled for about 10 rounds before snatching the cod off my hook and then it went back into the cold, dark deep. It was a pity I was not able to catch it, but what an amazing experience!

I posted a picture on the popular website reddit.com, some weeks ago, that showed the small village where I grew up. As you can see in the picture I have photographed the village up from the mountains called KrÃ¥ketindene. The house that I grew up in is the white one in the upper right corner.

As a result of posting the picture on reddit it got over 462 000 views (462 thousand views!) and 805 comments. Many wondered about the circles that you can see in the harbour (they are used for farming salmon). Other frequent questions were about how it is to live in Norway during the winter and if there are available jobs here (it seems like quite a few Americans want to try how it is to live abroad). After reading all the comments I feel really lucky to have such a beautiful place in the north.

The Oslofjord in Norway was covered with ice this winter due to some very cold periods, and since I travel by ferry over the fjord almost every day I was able to get some pictures of the broken ice.
The ice wasn’t that thick so the ferries were able to travel, but smaller boats had to stay in the harbors.

And here is a picture where you can get a closer view of the ice covering the Oslofjord. Ice and snow can be beautiful!

I was walking in the forest the other day when the reflection of the sunset started to glow on the snow around me. I had to take a picture of the beautiful scene with the trees covering the sun making a natural filter for my camera.
If you look at the photo in large size you can see some spots where the snow has melted and some old grass is peaking through. Spring is right around the corner here in Northern Norway 🙂

In this picture you can see a small fishing boat that is called “sjark” in Norwegian, sailing on the fjord. These small fishing boats are very typical for the fisheries on the coast in Northern Norway and I’m hoping that some day I will be doing fishing from a sjark too. They can be quite expensive to buy especially if you want to buy the boat with a quota for commercial fishing.
The spots over the boat and in the sky are seagulls and not dust spots on the camera sensor/lens 😉
