While walking in the outskirts of downtown I stumbled across this small fly on a burdock plant. After doing some research I have figured out that the fly most likely is called Tephritis bardanae. This fly is a part of the fruit fly family that consists of several thousand of species. This particular species is fond of the burdock plant, and as you can see in the picture the fly has landed on such a plant.
It looked like the fly was performing a dance on the plant to attract a partner, but that is pure speculation from my side.

If you take notice of your surroundings you will often find small beautiful things like this fly. Next time you are outside try to look around you and take notice of all the wonderful living beings in the nature, even in a large city 🙂

Close up picture of housefly (Musca domestica) on snow – First insect in Northern Norway

We have had a couple of warm days here in Northern Norway and a few insects have been waking up from their hibernation. In this picture you can see a common housefly (Musca domestica) sitting on some snow. Usually these flies are very hard to get close enough to get a good macro shot, but I guess the cold from the snow made this fly move slowly.
I can’t wait for all the insects to come back so I can start taking tons of macro photos.

Check out some macro pictures of flies from last year:

This is probably my last insect photo this year as the snow came to northern Norway today.
In this picture you can see a hoverfly (not sure about the species) feed on an autumn hawkbit (Leontodon autumnalis var. taraxaci) flower. This flower looks a bit like coltsfoot, but autumn hawkbit flowers, like the name implies, in the autumn.

I’m starting to get a collection of pictures of hoverflies feeding on flowers. Here are a few pictures:

  • Hoverfly feeding on cow parsley flowers
  • Hoverfly on a poppy flower
  • Hoverfly on dandelion flower

Macro picture of a blue eyed sawfly (Rhogogaster viridis)

Macro picture of a sawfly with blue eyes

Time for another macro photo of an insect. This time I have captured a sawfly (Rhogogaster viridis) clinging to a straw.
I really like the blue eyes on this sawfly. If you look at my other sawfly photo you can see that sawfly having a different eye color. I believe they are different species.
Need to get myself an insect book to educate myself on the nature around me.

Time for a close up photo of a hoverfly again. This time the hoverfly is feeding on cow parsley flowers (Anthriscus sylvestris; also known as wild chervil, wild beaked parsley, and keck).
