Today when I was out fishing I got a visit from a couple of white-tailed eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla). I had thrown a small fish overboard that they really wanted to catch. In the picture above you can see the majestic bird trying to get this fish. I really wish I had brought a proper camera with me, but the photo from the phone actually turned out pretty good.

The white-tailed eagle is very common in Northern Norway, and we have the biggest eagle population in the world along the coast of Northern Norway. The bird is very big (for comparison see the seagull in upper left corner of the picture) with up to 2.45 m wingspan. The eagle feed on fish, but it can also catch other birds and mammals. Whenever all seagulls take flight at once, you can be sure there is a white-tailed eagle around.

You can see other bird photos here.

The view from my bedroom in Northern Norway – 19th of May 2013

The view from my bedroom in Northern Norway - 19th of May 2013

I went for a spring trip to Northern Norway this year, and oh my did it pay off. The weather has been fantastic with temperatures well above 20 degree Celsius, something that is unusual this early in the year.
In the picture above I have photographed the view from my bedroom at midnight on the 19th of May. It is about this time we get midnight sun, but the sun went behind the mountains. Nevertheless, the view was spectacular and making it hard to go to sleep.
The mountains that you see far in the horizon is the second largest island in Norway, Senja. Please click on the photo to view it in larger size.

Spring is such a wonderful time in the north with all the birds coming back, flowers are popping up everywhere and the boat is finally back on the water. I think I need to take a week off every year to visit the old house on Andørja.

Picture from the darkest day in Northern Norway 21st of December 2012

Picture from the darkest day in Northern Norway 21st of December 2012
Taken with Olympus EPL-1 digital camera September 21st December 2012. Click image for larger view.

I had the pleasure of visiting my home place during the darkest days of this winter. Since we had clear weather it was not really dark at all in the middle of the day. Quite the opposite as the sky was filled with wonderful colors from a sun in the distant horizon.
I photographed the picture above a bit later than noon and the day was actually even lighter earlier in the day. The colors of the sky varied throughout the day and it was amazing to see, especially since I now live in the middle of Oslo where there is not so much landscapes to be seen.

The mountain you can see in this photo is called Drangen and I have photographed this magnificent piece of rock several times like here and here.

Picture of Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) sitting on lamp post

Taken with Olympus EPL-1 digital camera September 11th 2012. Click image for larger view.

On my trip to Northern Norway this summer I went on many fishing trips. One day when I was exiting the harbor there was a Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) sitting on lamp post. It didn’t seem to mind me so I grabbed my camera to get a picture of this beautiful bird. It was not very easy to capture the picture as I was sitting in a boat that was moving both sideways and up and down in the waves, and I wished that I had brought a lens with longer focal length.

The Great Cormorant is pretty common in Norway and I often see it when there is herring in the fjord. In other parts of the world they actually train this bird to fish for them as they are great fishers. I have never heard that this has been done in Norway, though.

Please see my other bird pictures here.
