These shells are called Ocean Quahog (Arctica islandica) and I had to take a photo of them because I liked the way the pair was placed on the sandy beach.
In Norwegian we call them Cow-Shells, probably because of their beautiful red/brown color.
According to the Norwegian Wikipedia (the English version doesn’t have an article about ocean quahog shells) there have been found individuals of these shells that are as old as 220 years!

Check out my macro photo of a limpet shell.

Close up photo of hoverfly feeding on an autumn hawkbit flower

Close up photo of hoverfly feeding on an autumn hawkbit flower
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera September 30th 2007. Click image for larger view.

This is probably my last insect photo this year as the snow came to northern Norway today.
In this picture you can see a hoverfly (not sure about the species) feed on an autumn hawkbit (Leontodon autumnalis var. taraxaci) flower. This flower looks a bit like coltsfoot, but autumn hawkbit flowers, like the name implies, in the autumn.

I’m starting to get a collection of pictures of hoverflies feeding on flowers. Here are a few pictures:

  • Hoverfly feeding on cow parsley flowers
  • Hoverfly on a poppy flower
  • Hoverfly on dandelion flower

Macro photo of Wolf spider on birch bark

Macro photo of Wolf spider on birch bark
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera April 19th 2007. Click image for larger view.

In this macro photo you can see a wolf spider (Lycosidae). The wolf spiders got their name from the way they hunt as they run down their prey much like wolves do.

It is usually very hard to get close to wolf spiders to get a picture, but this photo was taken back in April when there was still patches of snow here in northern Norway. This spider was warming itself in the sun and didn’t care about me coming very close with my camera.
Please at the picture in large size to get a view of all the details of the wolf spider.

I don’t have many pictures of spiders, but I have one of an ant dragging a spider. Check it out if you are interested in insect photography.

Macro photo of Sundew (Drosera anglica) – A carnivore plant

Macro photo of Sundew (Drosera anglica) - A carnivore plant
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera July 4th 2007. Click image for larger view.

In this macro photo you see the carnivorous plant sundew. This specific specie is known as Great sundew or English sundew (Drosera anglica).
The sundew plants catch and eat insects to supplement their diet. The sticky drops on the leaves attract insects and when they land the sundew plants close their leaves so the insects can’t escape.

The forest colors are changing fast in the autumn. One of the most beautiful sights are that of aspen trees (Populus tremula) with their staggering yellow and red colors.

In this close up photo of some aspen leaves, you can see the leaves in the process of changing color from yellow to red.

See this blog post for more pictures of autumn colors.
