Close up photos of an Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) – My favorite fish

In this picture you can see a close up shot of an Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) that I fished earlier this year. This fish is so tasteful that my mouth waters just by writing this and despite it looks, its my favorite fish to eat 😉
The Atlantic halibut is one of the biggest flastfishes on our planet. It can become over 3 meters long and weigh well over 300 kg. The one I caught wasn’t not even close to those sizes and weighed about 4-5 kg. It still gave me quite a fight when I tried to reel it in with my fishing rod.
If you should ever have to luck of getting a big Atlantic halibut you have to be careful when you get it into your boat. I have heard a story about a man that was found dead with the halibuts tail deep inside his breast. They are very powerful!

Check this picture for a view from my fishing boat and this one of my uncle steering the boat to rich fishing grounds. Also follow Photos from Northern Norway on Facebook.

Macro picture of a butterfish (Pholis gunnellus) at the coast in Northern Norway

Macro picture of a butterfish (Pholis gunnellus)
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera April 28th 2007. Click image for larger view.

In this picture you can see a small butterfish (Pholis gunnellus) that I found under a rock when the tide was out. It is about 20 cm long and got its name because it has very slippery skin.

When I was a kid I used to play at the coast all the time. One of my favorite activities was to look under rocks and seaweed when the tide was out. There was always something interesting to find, like a butterfish, a crab or some funky colored periwinkles. I still enjoy walking the coastline and I always bring the camera 🙂
Check out this photo of a hermit crab that I photographed on another trip at the coast.

Macro photo of pink primula flowers with water drops

Macro photo of pink primula flowers with water drops
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera May 3rd 2007. Click image for larger view.

Time for a picture from the spring to remind ourselves of warmer times to come 🙂

The Primula got it’s name from the Latin word Primus that means “the first one”. It got it’s name because it is one of the first flowers to blossom in the spring.
The flowers are native to the temperate Northern Hemisphere, south into high altitude tropical mountains in Ethiopia, Indonesia and New Guinea, and are also found in temperate southern South America.
There are amazingly 400-500 species of Primula and some of species are called primrose, auricula, cowslip and oxlip. I have just seen a handful, but there are some really nice color combinations out there.

Up here in the north it is a very usual garden flower and it is spreading everywhere. Have you got Primula in your garden? Feel free to leave a comment 🙂

Macro pictures of withered calendula flowers (pot marigold) – Last remains of summer in Northern Norway

In these photos I have captured the last remains of summer here in Northern Norway. These flowers are from the calendula plant, also known as pot marigold.
I was amazed how long these plants were able to survive. They were even flowering after some nights with frost.

The first photo is of an orange calendula flower that look relatively fresh.

These yellow calendula flowers, though, look like they had to cave in for the colder season.

Found a small place on the coast that was filled with different kinds of beautiful shells. I had to take a picture of a selection of the shells.
Anyone know what the shells are called?
