I had the pleasure of visiting my home place during the darkest days of this winter. Since we had clear weather it was not really dark at all in the middle of the day. Quite the opposite as the sky was filled with wonderful colors from a sun in the distant horizon.
I photographed the picture above a bit later than noon and the day was actually even lighter earlier in the day. The colors of the sky varied throughout the day and it was amazing to see, especially since I now live in the middle of Oslo where there is not so much landscapes to be seen.

The mountain you can see in this photo is called Drangen and I have photographed this magnificent piece of rock several times like here and here.

I posted a picture on the popular website reddit.com, some weeks ago, that showed the small village where I grew up. As you can see in the picture I have photographed the village up from the mountains called Kråketindene. The house that I grew up in is the white one in the upper right corner.

As a result of posting the picture on reddit it got over 462 000 views (462 thousand views!) and 805 comments. Many wondered about the circles that you can see in the harbour (they are used for farming salmon). Other frequent questions were about how it is to live in Norway during the winter and if there are available jobs here (it seems like quite a few Americans want to try how it is to live abroad). After reading all the comments I feel really lucky to have such a beautiful place in the north.
You can read all the comments over at the thread on reddit.

You can see the mountain range where I was photographing from in this picture.

Picture of rocks at low tide in Northern Norway

Picture of rocks at low tide in Northern Norway

Here is a picture that I photographed on a trip to Northern Norway. The tide was very low that day and this uncovered some rocks that usually is covered by the sea water. As you can see (click on the picture to view the large sizer version) there was some really interesting rocks and some kind of coral growing on the rocks that you do not usually see.

The mountain in the background is called Drangen and is a part of our neighbor island, Rolla.

Macro picture of ladybug/ladybird (Coccinellidae) hunting plant lice

Macro picture of ladybug/ladybird (Coccinellidae) hunting plant lice
Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera August 8th 2009. Click image for larger view.

I came across this ladybug (or ladybird as it is known in some parts of the world) (Coccinellidae) while I was out photographing. As I looked closer I noticed that the beetle was hunting some plant lice. The lice was feeding on a burdock plant so the plant was probably happy that this ladybug flew by. I have uploaded an extra large version of this picture so please click it to see a larger version where you can see more details.

We have 54 different species of ladybugs in Norway and I’m not completely certain what kind this is as I forgot to count the number of spots on its back. Many of the species feed on plant lice like the ones photographed here, and they are important to keep plant lice in check so their numbers do not get out of control.

Please check out my other insect pictures here.

Picture of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) fish caught in Northern Norway

Here is have photographed a couple of Atlantic herring (Clupea harengus) that I caught in a net when I was visiting Northern Norway in September this year. The herring is one of the most important types of fish on the coast of Norway. We mostly use to catch herring in the fall when schools of the fish come into the fjords. We use the herring both as food and as bait to catch other fish like the Atlantic halibut. If the herring is used for food it is usually fried whole or salted for later use.
Personally I prefer to use herring as bait as I’m not the biggest fan of the special taste from this oily fish.

Check out my other fish pictures here.
